La Froscà Soave Classico D.O.C.
The Product in Brief:
A hill of refined seduction. Gini’s La Froscà Soave Classico takes its name from the volcanic hill of Monteforte d’Alpone (VR) on which it is grown. Here, at around 180 metres of altitude, the Gini family has cultivated Garganega for fifteen generations and tends a vineyard of roughly 6 hectares, facing south-east, with vines that reach an average age of about 100 years. An extraordinary viticultural heritage behind one of the estate’s most representative Soave Classico wines. The volcanic nature of the hill and its marked temperature swings shape a microclimate particularly suited to Garganega. Those differences in temperature slow the ripening of the grapes and encourage a broad, elegant aromatic range. The old vines, trained to the Veronese pergoletta at a density of 4.000 plants per hectare and a yield after selection of just 50 hl/ha, drive their roots deep into the soil and return the mineral character of this place to the wine. The vineyards are farmed under certified organic cultivation and the harvest is carried out by hand in mid-October, the bunches picked into wooden crates.
After a gentle pressing, the must stays in brief contact with the skins. Fermentation, at controlled temperature and with no added sulphites, takes place partly in stainless steel and partly in French oak casks seasoned for at least three years. La Froscà then rests for at least eight months on its own natural fermentation lees, partly in stainless steel tanks and partly in small 228-litre casks of seasoned wood. A long maturation that carries the Garganega towards complexity and depth while preserving the precise mineral imprint of the cru. In the glass it is straw yellow with green-gold highlights. The nose is elegant and layered, where mineral notes meet acacia blossom, white peach and pear. On the palate the character of the land emerges firmly: saline, vibrant and deeply mineral, with hints of flint, yellow apple, lemon, white peach and almond. Assertive and silky, it keeps great balance and a long finish.
La Froscà is not merely a Soave to drink young: it is a wine able to evolve over time, gaining new nuance and complexity as it ages.
