Maciete Fumé Sauvignon Veneto I.G.T.
The Product in Brief:
A beguiling mineral setting. Maciéte Fumé Sauvignon Veneto IGT is born at Campiano, in the eastern Alta Valpolicella (VR), where in 1987 Gini began a project of environmental recovery and enhancement, giving these lands back their old beauty. It was here that the family started its journey into growing Pinot Nero, Chardonnay and Sauvignon, varieties that in this high-hill setting found conditions able to bring out their character and elegance. Maciéte Fumé is born from a limited production of about 2 hectares, from Sauvignon vines with an average age of 30 years. The vineyard, facing south, lies on the high hills of Campiano, where the roots reach down into clay and limestone soils. The vineyards are managed under certified organic farming and the harvest is done by hand, gathering the grapes into crates.
After crushing, the must stays for a short period in contact with the skins. Fermentation is carried out partly in steel tanks and partly in oak barrels, with vinification and fermentation without added sulphites. Once alcoholic fermentation is over no racking is carried out: the young wine stays in contact with its own lees until the arrival of summer. It is then blended, bottled and left to age for a few more months in bottle. In the glass it shows a bright straw yellow with greenish highlights. The profile is elegant, with fruity and floral hints woven into a precise mineral and savoury component. On the palate it is broad and fresh, with echoes of apple and hawthorn, a fine mineral tension and a delicate vanilla note on the close. A Sauvignon that does not look only for the aromatic immediacy of the variety but brings out its finesse, freshness and minerality, telling through the glass the particular character of the Campiano hills.
The name, finally, holds its origin: “Maciéte”, in the Veronese dialect, means a small thicket, understood as a small plot of land, while “Fumé” recalls the Sauvignon. A limited production, made for discovering one of the most personal readings of this variety by Gini.
