Spettinato sparkling sur lie wine Veneto IGT
The Product in Brief:
Spettinato, free by nature. Spettinato Garganega Frizzante Veneto IGT by Masiero Wine is an irreverent and authentic sparkling sur lie wine, made to be enjoyed without too many conventions. Its name already captures its spirit: it does not seek formal perfection, nor does it try to conform to a predetermined style. It comes from a hillside in Mossano, in the heart of the Colli Berici, from Garganega vines trained using the traditional Pergola Veronese system, and follows its own distinctive path through bottle refermentation and prolonged contact with the lees. The vineyard lies in a hilly landscape characterised predominantly by limestone soils with red clay, where Garganega has long found one of its historic expressions in the Vicenza area.
The vines are trained using the traditional Pergola Veronese system and, for Spettinato, the grapes are harvested by hand in early September, earlier than those destined for Galea, in order to preserve freshness and acidity—essential elements for a wine intended for refermentation. Winemaking begins with whole-cluster pressing. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts, using a pied de cuve: a small quantity of must that is allowed to begin fermenting spontaneously and is then used as a natural starter for the main batch, without the use of selected yeasts. The following April, tirage takes place to initiate the second fermentation directly in the bottle. Spettinato is neither disgorged nor filtered: the wine remains in contact with its lees and retains its natural sediment at the bottom of the bottle, an integral part of its identity as a Garganega Frizzante Sur Lie.
In the glass, it is straw yellow with greenish highlights, enlivened by fine, persistent bubbles. The nose is fresh and immediate, with aromas of fresh fruit, grapefruit and orange peel, accompanied by subtle nuances from its time on the lees. On the palate, it is fresh, lively and pleasantly structured, with fine bubbles carrying the wine through to a dynamic, refreshing finish. Spettinato is perhaps Masiero Wine’s freest interpretation of Garganega: a sparkling sur lie wine from the Colli Berici to be enjoyed naturally, allowing the sediment and bottle refermentation to tell an essential part of its story. As Mattia Masiero himself suggests: enjoy it light-heartedly.
